Their Vision: A world where everyone has a decent place to live.
We have selected Flatirons Habitat for Humanity as our second quarter charity again in 2016. Our agency will be donating $10.00 for every referral we receive from our customers and will be highlighting Flatirons Habitat for Humanity during the months of April, May and June. Through the work of Habitat, thousands of low-income families have found new hope in the form of affordable housing. Churches, community groups and others have joined together to successfully tackle a significant social problem―decent housing for all. A global housing crisis exists throughout the world and Habitat has helped build or repair more than 800,000 houses and served more than 4 million people around the world. Consider the following statistics that depict why Habitat for Humanity is needed and important:
The world is experiencing a global housing crisis
- Worldwide, some 827.6 million people live in urban slums.
- By 2020, it is estimated the world slum population will reach almost 1 billion.
- About 50 percent of the world’s population now live in urban areas.
- Lack of clean water and sanitation claim the lives of more than 1.8 million young children every year.
In the United States, 48.5 million people are living in poverty
Minimum wage is not keeping up with the rising cost of living and many workers struggle to afford decent housing. Decent, stable housing provides more than just a roof over someone’s head, it provides stability for families and children, creates a sense of dignity and pride, provides security and a healthy environment, and increases educational and job prospects.
Unfortunately, the percentage of people without access to decent, stable housing is rising. Habitat for Humanity has made a commitment to support the expansion of housing both as policy and as practice. Habitat builds and repairs homes throughout the world and across our country. RSS would like to support our community here in northern Denver, so we have committed to help our local chapter, Flatirons Habitat for Humanity. Flatirons Habitat offers several programs in the area including their Homeownership Program, Critical Home Repairs Program, and their ReStore. Please visit their website to learn more about these programs, how you can apply, or how you can donate your time.
We look forward to partnering again with Flatirons Habitat in the coming months and supporting their organization. We will not only be donating $10 for every referral we receive during the quarter to Habitat, but our team will be volunteering again in April at a building worksite in Jamestown. We had such a great time helping out last May and are looking forward to this opportunity as well. We will update you when we have more information on our projects with Habitat. We are hoping to have additional opportunities during the next three months to support their programs in additional ways. (We were very excited by the funds we raised last year through our “Garage Sales for a Cause” to support FHH and would love to do something similar again this year.) We hope you will join us!
