The holidays are a favorite time of year for many people. While we all look forward to enjoying special time with family and friends, we must also remember those that struggle during the holiday season. There are so many ways to give back in the Denver area throughout the holidays. To help get you started, we put together a list of some great ways to get involved this year:
- Share a holiday dinner with local heroes. Many firefighters, medical specialists and law enforcement professionals spend their holidays on the job in our metro areas. Bring a holiday dinner or treats to your local hospital, fire station or police station, and share the gift of thanks with local heroes who protect and serve our community every day.
- Offer comfort to those in need. Connect with local organizations that help to feed the hungry or provide warmth and shelter for those out in the cold. If you’re not sure where to start, spend just a little time researching the websites of our local volunteer organizations like Food Bank of the Rockies or the Denver Rescue Mission. Find out how and when you can help – and make it a family affair!
- Make some new friends at our local retirement homes. While many of our senior citizens are included in holiday celebrations with family and friends, some spend the season without anyone. Call your local retirement home and check into the volunteer opportunities they offer for helping with crafts, special events, playing cards or just spending time visiting.
- Donate to a family, teen or senior served by DHS (Denver Human Services) programs through the annual GIVE Denver Adopt-A-Family, Teen or Senior Holiday Gift Drive. According to their website, there are three easy ways to donate to the drive:
Adopt a family, teen or senior: Team up or register as an individual at denvergov.org/GIVE to “adopt,” or sponsor, a Denver family, teen, or senior. You’ll receive an individualized shopping list to use when shopping especially for your recipient. Register to sponsor by December 1.
Donate holiday gifts: Drop off a holiday gift at one of the designated sites by December 12, 2018 and GIVE Denver will deliver it to a DHS client. For a list of commonly requested gifts, head to denvergov.org/GIVE. Designated sites include all Denver Human Services locations and the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building.
Make a monetary donation: Let GIVE Denver do the shopping by making a credit card donation or sending a check to GIVE Denver, 1200 Federal Blvd., Denver, CO, 80204 with “Adopt-a-Family” in the memo line. All donations are 100 percent tax deductible.
At RSS, we make time each year to close our office and volunteer as a team with some of our favorite charities (A Precious Child, Flatirons Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank of the Rockies, and Samaritan’s Purse). We hope you find time to share with others this holiday season and beyond – you’ll be glad you did!
